Construction Craft Worker
FPDI and the Manitoba Building Trades Institute, together with the LiUNA Training Institute, have launched an accredited Pre-employment Program specifically for Indigenous people interested in becoming Construction Craft Workers. This program helps participants build important skills in job readiness, safety, and hands-on construction work. It offers a clear path to starting an apprenticeship and finding employment in the construction industry.

Construction Craft Workers typically work on construction sites, doing a variety of tasks such as preparing the site, setting up equipment, and working with materials like concrete, masonry, and steel. They’re also involved in jobs like demolition, digging, and managing site safety and traffic flow.

Bricklayer
FPDI and the Manitoba Building Trades Institute, working together with Bricklayers Local 1, have created a Pre-apprenticeship Bricklayer Program designed for Indigenous individuals. This program helps participants develop key skills in job readiness, safety, and construction, while also creating a direct path to starting an apprenticeship and finding work in the trade.

Bricklayers are responsible for building and repairing structures using materials like brick, stone, and tile. Their work includes tasks such as constructing walls, floors, and chimneys, as well as getting surfaces ready and applying moisture protection.

Heat and Frost Insulator
In 2025, FPDI teamed up with Insulators Local 99 to introduce the Heat and Frost Insulator Pre-Apprenticeship Program—a 17-week course that gives participants important safety training, job readiness skills, and hands-on experience in construction.

Heat and frost insulators work by reading blueprints and project plans to figure out what materials are needed. Their job involves measuring, cutting, fitting, and installing insulation materials, as well as safely handling or sealing off old asbestos insulation when required.

There are job opportunities in construction companies, insulation contracting businesses, and industrial settings.
If you enjoy hands-on work, have a good eye for detail, and are comfortable working both indoors and outdoors, becoming an insulator could be a great fit—especially if you're interested in helping save energy and making buildings more efficient.
